Recent government trade data indicate that rubies account for roughly three‑quarters of Mozambique’s total colored gemstone exports by value, making them by far the dominant stone in the country’s gemstone sector.

The Montepuez region in Mozambique is generally regarded as the single largest known ruby deposit, supplying a very large share of the global ruby market in the last decade (often quoted as around half of world supply). The Montepuez mines have yielded rubies of substantial sizes, including notable discoveries like the “Estrela de FURA.”

King of Precious Stones

Ruby, a gemstone renowned for its vibrant red hue, is a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminum oxide). The presence of chromium impurities within the crystal lattice imparts the characteristic red color to rubies. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness (10-point scale measuring a material's scratch resistance, 10 equals the hardest), rubies rank at 9.0, making them exceptionally durable and suitable for everyday wear.

Historically, rubies have been treasured across various cultures. In ancient India, they were referred to as the "king of precious stones," symbolizing power and youthful energy. In medieval Europe, rubies were believed to confer health, wisdom, and success in love. Their enduring allure continues to captivate gem enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

Today, rubies have surged in popularity as a centerpiece for engagement rings and to add the color of love, passion, and desire for romantic overtones in fine jewelry. It is a rare and valuable opportunity to obtain a high-quality, natural and untreated ruby, as they often set new records of dollars spent per carat when auctioned–”Estrela de FURA” (Mozambique) holds the record for being the most valuable ruby.

Ruby Mines

Rubies are mined in several regions worldwide, each producing stones with distinct characteristics.

Mozambique: Recently, Mozambique has become a prominent source of high-quality rubies, celebrated for their vibrant, saturated, darker red color and relative clarity.

Myanmar (Burma): Known for the most historically celebrated rubies, famous for their saturated, slightly bluish pigeon-blood red, high transparency, and strong fluorescence.

Sri Lanka: Known for lighter, pinkish-red rubies, often referred to as "Ceylon rubies."

Thailand: Produces rubies with darker shades, often with brownish-red tones.

Vietnam: Produces pink to strong red rubies, some with attractive fluorescence and clarity.

Tanzania: Produces bright, vivid red to slightly purplish-red rubies, some of which are very fine quality.

Madagascar: Emerging as a significant source, offering rubies with varying colors and qualities.

Rubies from Mozambique

Mozambique's Montepuez region has gained international acclaim for its ruby deposits discovered in the early 2000s. These rubies are notable for their intense red color and relatively high clarity. The region's geological conditions have contributed to the formation of rubies with fewer inclusions, enhancing their desirability in the gemstone market.

Mozambique rubies exhibit several distinctive features:

Color: They range from bright red to deep purplish-red hues, often displaying fluorescence under ultraviolet light, which enhances their visual appeal.

Clarity: These rubies typically have fewer inclusions compared to those from other sources, making them particularly attractive to gem cutters and collectors.

The combination of these characteristics has positioned Mozambique rubies as some of the most sought after gemstones.

The Royal Ruber Collection

The Royal Ruber Collection was born from an extraordinary 6.34-kilogram rough natural Mozambique ruby (pictured), certified by GIA under registration No. 222888147. The word “Ruber” is a Latin word that means "red" and is the direct origin of the word “ruby.”

This exceptional gemstone was expertly cut by Brazilian master gem cutter Braga at B. Gems Lapidary. Each piece was meticulously shaped with precision, ensuring optimal proportions and breathtaking brilliance. After the cutting process, every gem was painstakingly polished to achieve a magnificent luster—an artistry that only a seasoned master craftsman can accomplish.

The final result is The Royal Ruber Collection is comprised of four separate Tranches (three Tranches each contain 24 rubies and one Tranche contains 25 rubies), that showcase a variety of shapes and sizes. Achieving such precision required a significant material sacrifice, having a 60% weight loss from the original rough stone to allow for greater diversity in gem cuts.

Mozambique Rubies

1) Exceptional Gemstone Quality

Mozambique rubies show a pure, saturated red—sometimes described as “pigeon’s blood”—often with minimal secondary tones that rivals the best Burmese rubies, one of the most prized color zones in the ruby world. Beyond classic red, many Mozambique rubies show pinkish or slightly purplish undertones that are very fashionable in modern jewelry, broadening their design versatility and appeal.

The natural fluorescence of Mozambique rubies enhances their brilliance under light. They often have fewer clouds, fractures, and obvious inclusions, allowing for cleaner, more brilliant cuts and higher eye-appeal. This makes them a top choice for fine-jewelry at high prices.

A significant portion of Mozambique rubies, which require minimal treatment compared to other sources, reach the market untreated or only minimally treated, which is a major premium driver because “no heat” rubies are rarer and more trusted by collectors and investors, thereby increasing their intrinsic value. Additionally, their good clarity and crystal structure mean lapidaries can cut these stones to maximize light return, brilliance, and face up size, which boosts their desirability in rings and high end settings.

Mozambique Rubies

2) Supply Constraints & Increasing Demand

Limited "premium" output relative to total volume–rubies are finite: Much of Mozambique’s production is dominated by small‑ to medium‑sized, lower‑value stones; only a small fraction qualifies as large, clean, high‑color “investment‑grade” material, constraining the true luxury‑supply pool. High-quality rubies remain rare and are becoming increasingly scarce as primary sources are depleted–shortage dynamics creates a "supply scare" bid.

Geopolitical and operational risk in Cabo Delgado: The Montepuez district sits in a region affected by social tension and conflict, leading to delays, project halts, and increased costs for major operators, all of which constrain reliable long‑term supply, thereby increasing the value of “investment‑grade" rubies.

Strong demand in global markets for ethically traceable sourcing: Burmese rubies have political and ethical concerns, the demand for Mozambique rubies has surged in luxury markets: China, India, Middle East, and USA.

Prestigious auctions, luxury jewelry houses, and private sales: High‑end jewelry houses and auction houses are increasingly featuring Mozambique rubies in collections, driving institutional demand for premium stones. A sharp increase in the per carat value of fine Mozambique rubies over the last decade has been realized in sales.

3) Market Value & Investment Performance (Historical Appreciation)

The price of fine rubies has more than tripled in the last two decades, far outpacing gold and even many diamonds. This last decade has had notable rubies auctioned for remarkable high prices.

In 2015, a 25.59 carat Burmese ruby (Sunrise, pictured) sold for $30.3M ($1.18M/carat) at Sotheby's Geneva.

In 2015, a 15.04 carat Burmese ruby (Crimson Flame) sold for $18M ($1.2M/carat) at Christie's HK.

In 2016, a 15.59 carat Burmese ruby (Jubilee) sold for $14.6M ($885.5K/carat) at Christie's NYC.

In 2017, a 13.26 carat Burmese ruby (Bhagat-Gubelin) sold for $10.4M ($784.3K/carat) at Sotheby's HK.

In 2018, a 24.70 carat Burmese ruby (Bhagat-Gubelin) sold for $11M ($445.3K/carat) at Sotheby's HK.

In 2023, a 16.05 carat Burmese ruby (Mythic) sold for ~$10M–$15M (~$623K–$935K/carat) at Christie's HK.

In 2023, a 55.22 carat Mozambique ruby (Estrela de FURA, pictured) sold for $34.8M ($630.3K/carat) at Sotheby's NYC, the current record setter for the largest and most expensive ruby sold at auction.

Mozambique Rubies

4) Comparative Performance vs. Other Assets

Rubies, particularly from Mozambique, have outperformed traditional investments, offering strong returns with less volatility compared to equities and real estate. Ruby investments derive value mainly from scarcity and collector demand, not from corporate cash flows or creditworthiness, so they do not have dividend‑ or coupon‑default risk.

Asset Class / 10-Year Appreciation (%)

Mozambique Rubies / 300%

Gold / 36%

High-Quality Diamonds / 30%–40%

S&P 500 Stocks / 182%

Investing in rubies don't have traditional investment risks, as rubies are directly owned physical assets, so they are not exposed to bank or fund-counterparty failure. They don't have the interest rate and monetary policy sensitivity that bond and real estate valuations undergo when the central bank rate changes. Stocks and ETFs move heavily with news, sentiment, and trading algorithms, which can lead to sharp short-term drawdowns–rubies don't have daily price volatility and algorithmic swings. High-quality rubies make "cents" to invest in.

5) A Rare Investment Opportunity

Exceptional Cutting & GIA Certification

Each piece has been cut by a Master Gem Cutter and undergone strict GIA certification, producing independent, objective scientific reports on its weight, shape, measurements, cutting style, and color. These GIA reports ensure the gemstone’s quality and authenticity, giving buyers transparency, confidence, and assurance that they are paying for accurate, unbiased information -- protecting its true market value. The tightening ethical and ESG standards give certified and traceable rubies much more command for liquidity and price premiums over less‑transparent origins.

Limited Supply = High Value

Mozambique rubies are increasingly scarce, making this collection a valuable opportunity for portfolio diversification.

Projected Appreciation

Based on current market trends, high-quality rubies are expected to appreciate by 20%–30% annually, making this a compelling long-term investment for portfolio growth.

Portfolio Diversification & Inflation Hedge

The value of fine rubies aren't linked with stock markets and economical fluctuations, making them an ideal asset of wealth preservation. Precious gemstone assets historically outperform currencies during global inflationary periods.

Liquidity

Auction House Sales: Prestigious auction houses (Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Phillips) have consistently fetched record-breaking pricing for Mozambique rubies.

Private Collectors, High Jewelry Marketplaces & Online Brokers: High-net-worth individuals, luxury marketplaces, professional buyers, and online platforms match rubies with dealers, buyers, and collectors.

Institutional Investors: With the increasing trend of luxury asset funds, rubies are becoming an attractive segment for institutional investors looking for alternative wealth preservation strategies.

Brands: Rare and exclusive gemstones are sought to hedge volatility in the marketplace.

From 2021 to 2026, ruby prices have trended strongly upward, with the steepest jumps occurring from late 2021 onward as supply tightened and investment demand rose. High‑quality stones—especially larger, unheated rubies from key origins such as Mozambique and Myanmar—have reached record per‑carat levels by 2025–2026.
