My Process

From Brief to Manufacturing

Define the brief and constraints

  1. Clarify design goals: target customer, style (e.g., solitaire, halo, pavรฉ), budget, and deadline.
  2. Gather gem data (dimensions, cut, girdle thickness) and metal specs so the CAD model respects realistic tolerances and minimum thicknesses for durability.

Set up your CAD environment

  1. Choose jewelryโ€‘focused CAD software (e.g., Rhino + plugins, MatrixGold, JewelCAD, Freeform) and configure units to millimeters for precision.
  2. Import gemstone profiles or preโ€‘made setting libraries, and set layers for stones, metal, prongs, and construction to keep the model organized.

Build a precise 3D model

  1. Start from reference sketches or orthographic views, then model the main forms with accurate ring sizes, wall thickness, and clearances for stones.
  2. Add structural details such as galleries, underโ€‘bezels, bridges, and prongs, checking that no area is too thin to cast or polish and that stones are properly supported.

Refine, analyze, and render

  1. Run measurements and section cuts to confirm metal thickness, symmetry, and comfort (e.g., height off the finger, sharp edges).
  2. Apply materials and create realistic renders so clients and team members can review proportions, stone playโ€‘ofโ€‘light, and surface finishes before prototyping, which is a standard stage in CADโ€‘driven jewelry workflows.

โ€‹Prepare for manufacturing and prototyping

  1. Export watertight solids with correct tolerances for 3D printing in castable resin or wax, ensuring orientation and supports suit jewelryโ€‘scale detail.
  2. Coordinate with the bench jeweler or caster on shrinkage allowances, sprue placement, and postโ€‘casting work (stone setting, polishing, engraving) so the digital model translates cleanly into a finished piece.

Other operators, including FURA Gems and partners, report substantial capital spending on exploration, bulk sampling plants and wash plants in the Montepuez district, such as building bulk sampling and wash plant capacity to around 300 tonnes per hour.

Government, GIA and news reports mention at least three major industrial operators currently active in ruby mining: Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), SLR Mining, and Moza Minerals. In addition, FURA Gems and numerous smaller licensed concessions, including widespread artisanal and illegal mining activities, are present in the region.

Lunch is best served with gemstones. I've tried diamonds, they leave me parched. The emeralds next, they leave a craving. I found that sapphires make me feel peckish. The topaz is a mistake, I stay ravenous. A ruby is the most delicious and satisfying, as I always order a second serving!

I Eat Rubies for Lunch is my forthcoming memoir which reveals a tell-all tale about the making of The Royal Ruber Collection and all the recipes I've learned to make a delicious life that savors in love, family, friends, laughter, sorrow, and lessonsโ€”that is my prosperity.
